You grab your iPad, hit the Home button, and nothing happens. You press the top Power button, and again, nothing happens. You panic.

Wait, don’t panic. Let’s go through some steps our certified technicians go through when trying to identify what is wrong when an iPad won’t turn on.

First Step:

Try holding down the Home button and the Power button simultaneously. The Apple logo should come up within a couple of seconds.

Nothing happens? Okay, let’s move on to the second step.

Second Step:

Your iPad’s battery may be completely dead. You’ll need to plug it in with the charger.

Many times, when the battery is completely depleted, the iPad will not respond when you try to turn it on while it is charging. You’ll need to allow it to charge some before it has enough power to boot up.

Leave th;e iPad charging for thirty minutes. Go back to the first step after it’s charged for that amount of time.

Last Step:

So, it’s been charging for a while, and when you try to turn it on, it still won’t do anything. Well, unfortunately for you, that probably means there is:

  1. A hardware failure, which means something inside of the iPad is damaged and may need to be repaired or replaced. This could be the lightning connector, which is the dock where you plug the charger. It could also be a malfunctioning power button.
  2. The battery is completely dead, so it won’t charge at all. You’ll need an iPad battery replacement for that.
