We have something special for our blog today… a guest blog! This is written by one of our favorite customers. We’ve helped her out a few times, and also got the privilege of sponsoring her attendance at the BlogHer’10 conference in New York. Her blog and information is at the end of the entry. Enjoy! –Brian
The economy has been hard on my family, as I am sure it has been on many, many other families in the United States. And the aftermath of this recession we are apparently coming out of leaves a nasty trail of wreckage in it’s path. My husband’s job has been chewed up and spit back out due to the industry that he is in, so we have had to find creative and alternative ways to keep our family fed, clothed, and in our first real home in the neighborhood we love.
You see. I am a blogger; a Mommy Blogger to be exact, and I have been for over three years. I have turned my blog from a cute little journal about my kids first words and fun family photos into a business that is continuing to grow with each passing day. But I will be the first to tell you that the money I make off of my blog doesn’t put the food on our table or keep the roof over our heads (yet, but I’m working on that!), but it does give me amazing opportunities, opens doors that may otherwise not be achievable for someone like me, and it creates relationships on a variety of levels, with a variety of people.
But maybe I am getting ahead of myself here. Because another little tidbit of information you need to know about me is, I am an iPhone lover. It not only is one of the coolest gadgets around that does even cooler things, it also helps keep me in touch with everyone at any given moment with the swipe of a single finger. This is key when it comes to keeping my blogging business going. I have to be able to answer emails, take photos, do research, skype all day long, whether I am it is right before bed, while the kids are eating lunch, or while I am sitting at a stoplight. My iPhone is literally just as important as my right hand, and I am pretty sure I’d have a hard time functioning without one of those.
Remember those opportunities I was talking about, yeah well…it all begins like a fairytale.
Once upon a time, just about 6 months ago, I dropped my iPhone, shattering the screen, leaving shards of glass sticking out, not to mention all over the floor. I was devastated, especially when the Apple people told me there was nothing I could do. Since I was still in contract, and shattered screens were not covered, my only choice was to purchase a new iPhone. And replacing my particular model was going to cost me $600.
WAIT! That’s not a fairytale, that’s a nightmare!
Anyhow, I didn’t have $600 in my back pocket (stinkin’ economy, remember?). So I went on Twitter, and made a shoutout; I guess it was more like a desperate plea for guidance. I was passed on a link for iResQ. I checked them out, and decided it was my only hope. I won’t lie, I was petrified sending off my iPhone to iResQ. What if they stole it? What if it got lost in the mail? What if? What if? What if? I didn’t have much choice so off it went. Needless to say, it came back in perfect condition, in less than 72 hours, and I was a happy camper. Well, until I shattered the screen again, and again (3 times in less than 6 months!). I have got to be iResQ’s most frequent customer. Buy stock in them, really. As long as i have an iPhone, I will not be able to live without iResQ.
Being a blogger I find relationships with companies just as valuable as gold. And as long as we are able to work together on some scale and it is a company I support, I am pleased to represent them. Now, ever since my very first experience with iResQ, I have been a fan. I often tweeted about them, referred friends from work, and even blogged about them. So when it came time to attempt to find a sponsor for BlogHer’10 (because I knew I could not afford a trip to NYC all on my own), I began emailing companies to see if they were interested. I got MANY No’s. MANY. But I truly believe, all of those “No’s” helped me tweak myself and MY pitch into what it is iResQand I finally agreed on. You see, I think I finally found the secret. So many people send out “blind pitch’s”, in hopes that a company they have never worked with would be willing to take a chance on them. In most cases (and I say most, because I am sure SOME people were lucky enough to find companies like that), that’s not going to work. You have to look at it from there point of view. It is a huge risk, even for a company you DO know and have previously worked with. It’s all business. And some companies have the wiggle room to take a chance, and some don’t. It’s hard to not take the “No’s” personally, especially when it’s a company you KNOW you are a good fit for. But it’s not personal. You just have to find the “perfect” company that fits you like a glove. And iResQ is that to me, they fit me like a glove, a glove with my iphone in my hand of course.
iResQ took a chance on me, and I am happy to say, I think represented them well. The NUMEROUS first hand experiences with their company and services make me an expert, I am an avid Apple product enthusiast, and I feel honored they accepted the risk in sponsoring me. Even though it wasn’t personal when those other companies told me “No”, it WAS personal when iResQ said “Yes”.
