Sun Day, Sun Day, Sun Day.

Ah, spring. What a wonderful and glorious thing to follow winter. Especially an apocalyptic winter that dumped record quantities of snow, then teased a hint of spring, then threw in one last mid-April blizzard just to remind us we’re at weather’s mercy. It’s not often that you park your car in the sixty-degree sun, go inside, then come out two hours later and literally have to chip half-inch thick ice from your door locks, but I did it. Good riddance. But this weekend, oh man did I take advantage of the season change. Took the dog for a run, did some yard work, grilled a meat feast, drove around with the sunroof open. I even went out the back porch and just sat. That’s it. Just me and the sun, man to man. I highly recommend it.

Not my back porch.

Not my back porch.

And what would a weekend in the sun be without good musical accompaniment? Without further ado, my iTunes pick of the week. You Can’t Take It With You, the third full-length album from As Tall As Lions seems a bit of an experiment in finding middle ground between the soaring atmospheric guitar effects of Brit bands like Doves and Band of Horses and the simple but emotional song craft of solo sad-sacks Jeff Buckley, Nick Drake or Elliot Smith. At times both intense and restrained, You Can’t Take It With Youis capable of manipulating your emotions more than the average rock record, and that becomes more evident the more you listen. So go ahead, pick it up from iTunes. Put it on your iPad, iPod or iPhone. Then put your buds in, go out to the back porch and welcome the dusk. Not a bad way to spend a weekend.
