Shuffle Me Timberz!
On Tuesday Apple released their newest addition to the iPod family – the Third Generation iPod Shuffle. I first reacted like any Apple enthusiast would. I got really upset that I no longer had the newest and the greatest, but then after a few minutes I was able to calm down and convince myself that I didn’t really NEED the new version.
The new Shuffle has undergone some pretty significant design changes. The housing of the shuffle is free from any dials or buttons. I was pretty surprised by this, as I really like having the dial located directly on the housing itself. The user now seems to control most of the Shuffle’s functions by using a clicking device located on the cord of the head-phones. At first this seems like a pretty nice feature, and it is, however this makes the user completely dependent on Apple’s head-phones for operation. And if any of you are like me, those darn ear-buds just do not fit in my ears. Also, the new Shuffles do NOT come in a large assortment of colors. For the time being it looks as if the only colors available are silver and black. Needless to say, my first impression of the new Shuffle is not great.
Of course, with the bad there is always some good. The new Shuffle does have some really cool new features. First of all, Apple has managed to cram 4 GBs of space into an enclosure that is smaller than your average house-key. Also, Apple has introduced what they are calling “VoiceOver” to the new Shuffle line. From what I understand, at a push of a button the Shuffle will tell you the title of the song and the artist. Pretty darn cool if you ask me!
Anyway, I just thought I would take a moment to comment on a new Apple product. I am sure it is a pretty cool little piece of equipment. However, with a sticker price of $79…I think I will just stick with my new Orange 8 GB Nano. I mean, for another $71 you could have twice the space, a scroll wheel, a color of your choosing, and a screen.
…..but that’s just my two-cents 😉
