Thanks for posting this! I have an Intel MacMini and had removed the internal drive and upgraded to an external SATA drive, which I had previously formatted as an Apple Partition. Your description above saved me a bit of head scratching after Leopard refused to install. Thanks!

I got exactly this error message when I tried to upgrade. Thank you for posting it verbatim -- when I googled on the error message text, this page was the first hit. What a relief, to have a quick answer!

I had upgraded my MacBook Pro with a Western Digital hard disk a while ago. I used Super Duper to make a bootable copy of my system on the WD disk, which was initially set up as an external USB drive. Then I opened the computer, removed the original hard disk, and installed the WD disk in its place. I had made sure to format the WD disk's volume as Mac OS Extended (Journaled), but it never occurred to me to check the disk's partition scheme as well. When I was done with my disk upgrade the system booted and worked just fine, so I assumed everything was good until I ran into this GUID error today.

So in hindsight, although OS X won't install onto a non-GUID disk, it will apparently boot from a non-GUID disk if it's been copied there with Super Duper.
